Moving SmartPLS to a New Computer

Moving to a new computer takes three things: install SmartPLS, move your license, and copy your workspace folder with your projects. If you still have the old computer, start there.

1. On the old computer

  1. Find your workspace folder. SmartPLS shows it at the top of the Workspace panel.
  2. Close SmartPLS, then copy the whole workspace folder, for example to a USB stick or a cloud drive.
  3. Start SmartPLS again, choose SmartPLS › Switch License and click Deactivate license. This frees your license for the new computer.
No access to the old computer anymore? Skip this part. You can still move the license (see step 3, "If the license is still active on the old computer").

2. On the new computer: install SmartPLS

Download SmartPLS for your system and install it.

3. Move your license

Seat license

  1. Start SmartPLS and choose Professional license.
  2. Enter your license key and click Submit.
If the license is still active on the old computer, SmartPLS shows "License is in use":
  1. Click Reactivate license.
  2. We send a confirmation code to the email address linked to the license.
  3. Enter the code. The license now runs on the new computer, and the old computer no longer has a license.
No longer have access to that email address? Contact support.

Floating license

Nothing needs to be moved. Install SmartPLS on the new computer and enter the same license key, or connect to your organization's license server. A floating license is only in use while SmartPLS is running.

4. Move your projects

  1. Copy the workspace folder from step 1 to the new computer.
  2. In SmartPLS, choose Files › Choose workspace… and select the copied folder.
Your projects and data files open as before. If your workspace is on a cloud drive, you only need to choose the same folder on the new computer.

Common questions

Can I use my seat license on both computers?

No. A seat license runs on one computer at a time. When you move it, the old computer loses the license.

How often can I move a seat license?

As often as you replace or reinstall a computer. Moving a seat license is meant for changing computers, not for sharing one license among several people. We review licenses that are moved more than three times a year. If several people need SmartPLS, a floating license is the right choice.
